drink up

Best piece of advice I can possibly give- you’ve heard it 10 million times before but ignored it every time. I started this routine in November of 2008 and my health/skin/energy level has improved dramatically since.

Drink 64 ounces of water a day.

For real- just try it. Yes, it gets super annoying going to the lady’s room soooo many times a day, but it is totally worth it. I can actually notice changes in my appetite, metabolism, water retention, energy levels, and skin! No joke. PLUS I have only been sick about 3 times in the past 2 years compared to being sick about every 3 months of my life previous to this regimen. If you are in need of instructions click here.

Benefits:
· regulate appetite
· increase metabolism
· boost energy levels
· less water retention
· alleviate some headaches
· help reduce blood pressure
· help reduce high cholesterol
· ease joint pain
· decrease in risk of some cancers
· less chance developing kidney stones
· release toxic waste products
· improves skin

im a free b*tch

The only word that accurately describes a Lady Gaga live performance is exhilarating. The message she preaches is what I want to teach my children in the future. John Lennon, Andy Warhol, Princess Diana, Marilyn Monroe and Gandhi have possessed her soul. Her efforts to create equal rights in the homosexual community are incredible. Every night she performs, Virgin Mobile donates $20,000 to her favorite foundation. They provide shelter, food, clothing and assistance to homeless men and women.  Many are homosexuals and transvestites that have been kicked out of their home by unforgiving parents. Starting her career in the lower east side of NYC she was surrounded by these individuals and instead of judging their situations, she listened.  At one point she laid on the stage, scantily clad in a hot black leotard with blood streaming down her chest, and proclaimed "Jesus loves all of us. He loves all transsexuals, gays and lesbians- he loves EVERY single one of us. The point she’s making transcends all beliefs whether they be religious or not.  An individual’s sexual inclination does not make anyone any less of a human being. These people were born that way; it is not a disease or a choice. Heterosexuals should not be given preference just because it is “normal” by general public opinion.  My good friends Jessica & Sean recently went to a protest in Dallas held at the Holocaust Museum.  The touring church goers (majority of them brainwashed children) of Westboro Baptist Church decided this was the best location to spread the message of Jesus Christ.  You can visit their website at http://www.godhatesfags.com/.  Jessica described her feelings before the protest as being angry at their ignorance until she was overwhelmed by the joy that filled her heart when she saw her community come together and show these haters what love really is. They protested peacefully and playfully.  That feeling of excitement Jessica had, that we can beat these views with positivity, is what I felt last night. Love is the only way we will conquer ignorance. Twenty years from now our children will read American history and discover how homosexuals were not allowed marriage rights in America- and they will laugh at its absurdity.  They will laugh at our discriminating law and how long it took to change it.  The first thing Gaga proclaimed after performing Just Dance is that she wanted us to be liberated during her show. She wanted us to leave not loving her more, but loving ourselves more.  As if it isn't obvious by my non-product related post- I'm feeling quite liberated and inspired right now. Technically though, Gaga is promoting a product. She's selling peace and I bought some last night. I'm a free bitch.

Soak it in.

I had an incredible experience throughout my entire wedding process and have lots of tips that worked for me. Every wedding is different but we can all use advice. Ryan has asked me to make Wednesdays “Wedding Wednesdays” and I think that’s a brilliant idea. So I shall.

If you are recently engaged, then I know that within the last hour you have looked down at your hand just to catch a glimpse of that pretty rock sitting on your finger. So many emotions will flood your veins- and I can promise you that this won’t change until a month or so after the wedding. Soak it in.

I was so worried of how I would handle my nerves on the big day that I often just freaked out- for no reason. On my hour long commutes home from work every day- I started mentally walking through each aspect of the day…what I would eat in the morning, getting my hair done, having my bridesmaids calm me down as we wait for the processional to begin, walking down the aisle, etc etc….I really am not sure how many times I did this in my head. Sometimes it brought me to tears just thinking of how special it will be and sometimes it freaked me out.

The day of the wedding, I was the total opposite of what I had anticipated I would be; calm, cool and collected. It was odd. I would visibly shake every time I put on my dress for fittings, so my bridesmaids were preparing for an anxious bride. I think all the mental preparations really made all the difference. I was able to enjoy and remember every single moment of May 29th, 2010.

So- my advice to all you future brides is to do the same. Mentally prepare and don’t let your focus shift to all the superficial tasks that come with planning a wedding.

Meet Ryan.

Skin type- dry, fair, dark circles under the eyes, and some spurts acne (probably stress induced considering she is in law school). She has asked me for recommendations for a daily foundation routine to help out her situation and get her skin looking healthy, fresh, and ready for her wedding next May. The next couple of posts I will address her issues (which most, if not ALL of us have) and give solutions

Acne / occasional zits- If you have more severe acne and have tried ProActive- give Max Clarity a try. It is an all-foam system and has helped my husband out a lot. The foam is light and dissolves into your skin quickly without drying out. We instantly saw results in his complexion and he said his face just “felt good” after applying the foams. For the occasional zit- a FABULOUS prevention tool is the Clearasil Ultra Pimple Blocker Pen (Thanks Caitlin for showing me this wonderful discovery). Carry it on the go and apply at the first signs of a zit. I haven’t had one fully develop since I started using it- I’m serious! Problem solved!

After acne solutions, always apply moisturizers. I’ll comment on them in another post because I could go on FOREVER about how important your moisturizer is for your skin type…

Dark circles under the eyes- There literally TONS of creams out there and you never really know which will work for you. Your best bet- go to TJ Maxx and check out their discounted creams. They carry high end lines for VERY cheap. When it comes to dark circles, I think you have to be willing to spend some money for results, but TJ Maxx allows you to get a very nice cream for a very affordable price. Let me know if you have found one that works for you

Get your glow on.

So, I come back from my honeymoon with sun poisoning and not much of a tan since it was rather cloudy the whole week- that sounds awful! It was an INCREDIBLE week, and thank goodness it was cloudy most of the week or I would have been stuck in with a rash on Wednesday instead of getting it the day we were leaving. Back to my point- I come back and people are like, “where’s your tan?”

Solution- Body Drench Quick Tan Sunless Tanning Mist (another insanely long overly description product name). I cannot exaggerate how amazingly natural this stuff looks. I come to work the next day after spraying myself (takes 5 minutes, the hubby has to do my back though) and almost every single girl in the office asks me how I got so tan in just one afternoon. I can’t lie. I just can’t- so I send them the link and these directions which I got off an Amazon review and tweaked a little. I gave up tanning beds (for life) after slowly killing myself in them for almost a decade as a promise to my husband after the wedding. While he pretty much hates the smell- he has to appreciate the fact that I am keeping myself out of the sun to keep looking young and out of the dermatologist office. I sprayed 2 days before my wedding- that’s how much I trust this product.

1. Shower and exfoliate. Get all the dead skin off or you will have blotches.
2. After showering, pull hair off of face. I use a head band and a pony to keep it off my neck and face. (take off jewelry)
3. Make sure you are completely dry. If water drips on you after you apply the product you will have drip marks.
4. Apply GENEROUS amounts of lotion to your elbows, neck, knees, top toes, in between toes, tops of fingers and in between fingers.
5. Put on a pair of disposable gloves.
6. Lay a towel down on the floor and get back in the shower.
7. Starting with the back of legs and working up, hold the can as far away from your body as possible (12 inches... no less) Make quick back and forth motions up your body until you reach your butt. Quickly do the outsides of your legs. Doing this quickly is the key to no blotches so only go over each area once. It will feel like you aren't really putting hardly anything on.. you don't need to! If you want a darker tan, you can repeat later.
8. Next, do your shoulders then arch your back to reach it. Again, holding can as far from your body as possible.
9. Lift your arms one at a time to do each of your sides.
10. Lift your chin and starting at your neck, go quickly back and forth over the front of your body.
11. You do NOT need to spray the tops of your feet. TRUST me on this! Enough product is landing there on its own.
13. Step out of the shower and onto the towel. If you have any spots you sprayed too much product on, rub it in now.
14. Do face last- spray onto sponge and blend like foundation- I put it on hair line so it blends onto scalp, get under chin as well
15. Take off the gloves and with the lotion still on, hold your hands inside your shower and give them a QUICK one time spray.
16. Rub the lotion off of your hands with the towel.
17. Wait 10 minutes to dress and enjoy your beautiful tan!!
* Do not shower/sweat for 6-8 hours (do before going to bed- doesn’t get on sheets as bad as others)
*Moisturize twice daily to maintain glow - it’ll last 3-4 days very well and you can still see it 6 days later, just not as "glowy"
Please comment on your experiences!

How to have healthy hair...

Shampoo/Conditioner- the starting point for whether you have a good or a bad hair day- that is if you actually wash your hair every day. The biggest tip I can give when it comes to keeping your hair healthy/shiny/free of split ends- DO NOT WASH YOUR HAIR DAILY. Grease (to an extent) is good. The natural oils are GOOD for your hair. I wash my hair 3-4 a week. In between washes, the key is dry shampoo. Tresemme just came out with a great one for under $5- just shake, spray, wait a minute, and brush. Instant refresher. Another (obvious) tip is to wear your hair up. I love wearing my hair up because I hate when my hair gets in my face. My hair MUST be comfortable or I will fidget with it all day. Practice makes perfect and that is the only way you will learn how to do your hair. A little hair spray on an updo always helps. Back to washing- when you DO shampoo/conditioner, they key isn’t exactly to find one amazing shampoo and stick with it for life. In my shower, I have over 5 pairs of shampoo/conditioners that I alternate each time I wash my hair. This keeps your hair from getting dull and flat- which is what happens when you use the same shampoo every day. Try it and tell me how it works for you!

Feeling Fresh Friday

Waking up at 5:30am Friday mornings is difficult to say the least. Especially when my hubby gets to sleep in since he doesn’t have Friday classes. Jealous? Very. But- that is the real world. However- I have found 2 products that make me feel like I slept in till 11:00 on Sunday morning.

Personally, if my face doesn’t feel fresh, I don’t feel like myself. I can even go without a shower and feel great just after using St. Ives Invigorating Apricot Scrub. It gently exfoliates and smells sooooo good. It won’t dry out your skin and it ok to use 3-4 times a week.
Product #2, Clinique, All About Eyes, Serum De-puffing Eye Massage. Whoa- quite a long description there Clinique. It’s like a giant ball point pen. The lady at the Clinique counter gave me a fabulous tip- put it in the freezer for about 2 minutes and then roll under your eyes. It is extremely refreshing (rather cold might I add). It runs about $25 @ Sephora. The cheaper option- Garnier Nutritioniste Skin Renew Anti-Puff Gel $11 @ Target. Does the exact same thing at half the cost.
Factors that cause puffiness and dark circles (www.mayoclinic.com)
• Fluid retention due to changes in weather (for example, hot, humid days), hormone levels or eating salty foods
• Sleeping flat on your back
• Not getting enough sleep
• Allergies or dermatitis, especially if puffiness is accompanied by redness and itching
• Heredity

Things I Adore - Thursday

mod cloth - little black dress in coral

simply love her.

When I turned 24…

I felt like my youth was fading and I realized I needed to start an anti-aging skin routine. At the same time, I got engaged and wanted to find the best makeup products to do my own wedding makeup. I can’t control myself when I find a fabulous hair product. Products are truly the key to shiny/healthy/manageable hair. I also enjoy stalking trendy clothing websites and finding unique/affordable finds. Now, after months of meticulous wedding planning, I have all these skin/hair/makeup products I have discovered and want to share them with all the pretty ladies I know. I am going to attempt to update 5 days a week and have made a super cheesy little plan because that’s just what I do:

Makeup Monday
Hair Tips Tuesday
What to Wear Wednesday
Things I Adore Thursday (randomness)
Feeling Fresh Friday (skin)

So to keep with the Thursday theme “Things I adore,” here are some pretty little random things
